Lusus

Lusus is, with good reason, the most feared dragon on earth today. Over many centuries he has, mainly with violence, acquired vast treasure, has conquered armies who tried to resist him and has brutally subdued those who rebelled.

None of this has brought content or enjoyment to his life. More treasure, more power – yet he never felt a sense of real achievement.

Born in Scotland, in the Cairngorm Mountains, he was still a very young and impressionable dragon when a cataclysmic event changed his life. His parents and one of his sisters were killed by marauding knights in search of treasure. Brought up by a doting grandmother and an affectionate older sister he was then schooled in all fields of accomplishments expected of dragons. And as a youngster he excelled. He was gifted. He was brave, adventurous, he was handsome and had charm and charisma. He was also cocky, fiercely competitive and given to temper tantrums. Yet his quirky sense of humour, together with an expansive personality made it easy for people to forgive any of his lapses. Even as a very young dragon he felt the need to lead, and due to his brilliance and personal magnetism he always had a large group of followers from right across the spectrum of the magic community.

One fateful day he met Morgan le Fay, an evil, powerful witch of surpassing beauty.  She recognised the potential in the young dragon and taught him the dark arts, the skill of hexing for personal gain and to eliminate an opponent. He adored her looks and admired her magnetism.

Under her influence his hunger for power and leadership increased. Soon he fell into bad company, that of brutish ogres and ill-favoured giants. He met the fairly unsociable mountain goblins, who came to revere the reckless, wild and daring dragon. So much so, that they asked him to be their official leader – their king or emperor.

Lusus, the vain Lusus, was delighted. He proudly acceded to their request, inspected the throne they fashioned for him and already saw himself as the leader of the whole magic community. But then there was trouble in the ranks of the goblins and the whole thing came to nought. Lusus was enraged, he was beside himself with anger – he cursed the mountain goblins and killed them all. He pursued them across the world, as they fled before his burning anger and annihilated them.

Disillusioned with Europe he settled in Africa for a while, but he was restless and soon travelled further and further, bringing mayhem to the East particularly, but striking anywhere his fancy took him.

The humiliation he felt when rejected by the mountain goblins made it even more important to him to have a large and powerful entourage and he surrounded himself with witches and warlocks, ghouls and trolls – all of the dangerous, dark magic variety.

His latest ambitious plan? To find and destroy the remnants of the enchanted harp, the instrument of peace. Once all traces of the harp's benign influence could be expunged, he would be able to subdue the, as he saw it, ineffectual rest of the magic community. And very likely also the incompetent humans. He would rule – with Morgan le Fay beside him.
