Morgan le Fay
Morgan le Fay, also known as Morgana or Morgaine le Fay, is first mentioned in literature in connection with King Arthur - see Geoffrey of Monmouth’s “Vita Merline”. Sometimes referred to as King Arthur’s half-sister (though there exists no certainty about their being related) she is, when originally described, not nearly as menacing and wicked as she is known to be today, although she probably always embraced the dark side of witching as opposed to Merlin, towards whom she is deeply antagonistic.
Surprisingly, she is at times even spoken of as a healer (a healing faery, hence the name “le Fay”). Despite the premise that no character can ever be entirely good or evil, Morgan le Fay has, undoubtedly, tended towards the latter over the centuries. Bit by bit she has become more malicious, sinister, dangerous and treacherous.
Even before her reputation had taken a dive, she showed a tendency towards being evil and untrustworthy – she was instrumental in putting King Arthur in mortal danger by stealing Excalibur’s scabbard, which was to prevent Arthur from bleeding, should he receive a wound in battle. She hated and opposed King Arthur’s wife, Queen Guinevere, and plotted her downfall. Reckless in her desire to achieve what she wants, she is egocentric, a megalomaniac who will always forge ahead according to her wishes irrespective of circumstances.
One fact, however, has never been disputed – Morgan le Fay is incredibly beautiful.
Still, time takes its toll on everyone, even on the most enchanting of witches, and in her quest to remain forever beautiful Morgan has found a recipe for eternal youth, albeit a solution which poses its own dangers and encompasses severe side effects.
Throughout her life, Morgan has hated Merlin and those magic folks that strive for peace and understanding. Her special hatred was reserved for the enchanted harp, an instrument made by the magic community in an effort to achieve and preserve harmony. Ever since the harp’s strings were stolen and the harp successfully silenced, Morgan has concentrated her considerable powers towards the destruction of the harp. Because once the harp is destroyed, the dark powers can rule – and Morgan will reign supreme.
